"Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but the Messenger of Allah and the Last of Prophets. And Allah has knowledge of everything" [Qur'an 33:40]Muhammad(pbuh) affirmed:
"My position in relation to the prophets who came before me can be explained by the following example: A man erected a building and adorned this edifice with great beauty, but he left an empty niche, in the corner where just one brick was missing. People looked around the building and marvelled at its beauty, but wondered why a brick was missing from that niche? I am like unto that one missing brick and I am the last in the line of the Prophets." [Bukhari, Kitab-ul-Manaqib]
"So I came and in me the line of Prophets has ended." [Muslim, Kitab-ul-Fada'il, Bab-ul-Khatimin-Nabiyyin]Muhammad(pbuh) affirmed:
"The chain of Messengers and Prophets has come to an end. There shall be no Messenger nor Prophet after me." [Tirmidhi, Kitab-ur-Rouya Babu Zahab-un- Nubuwwa, Musnad Ahmad, Marwiyat-Anas bin Malik]As recorded by Imam Al'Tahawi:
"Every claim to prophethood after him(Muhammad) is falsehood and deceit." [Imam al-Tahawi (d. 321 AH) in al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyya]

Note:
All messengers(Rasul) are necessarily prophets(Nabi). However not all prophets are messengers. Messengers usually were sent to their respective tribe/people [the exception being Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), as he was sent to all humanity] with a set of revelations recorded into a form of scripture & comprising of guidance and divine law.
While prophets came to a tribe/people as warners and teachers of existing religion but were not given a scripture or divine law. This is very important distinction that should be known by every Muslim, because some sects and false-religions like Ahmadiya, Bahai & Submitters use this in opposite way as a point of deception.
The general position based on hadith narrations is that Allah subhana'wa'tala sent 124,000 Prophets among whom 315 were Messengers and the last Prophet & therefore the last Messenger both being Muhammad(peace and blessings be upon him).
